Somalia Looks to Boost Port Development Through New Seattle Partnership

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s Port Authority Director-General, Ambassador Americo, visited the Port of Seattle this week at the invitation of Seattle Port Commissioner Hamdi Mohamed, marking a step toward closer maritime cooperation between the two ports.

During the visit, the two sides agreed to pursue a sister ports partnership aimed at strengthening institutional ties and expanding collaboration in the maritime sector.

According to officials, discussions focused on increasing technical cooperation through the exchange of expertise, professional training, and best practices in port management and operations. The meeting also explored plans for a new port development project intended to support Somalia’s growing maritime infrastructure.

The visit concluded with an agreement to arrange an official return visit, which both sides said would help advance the partnership and deepen trade and maritime links between Somalia and the U.S. Pacific Northwest.

The proposed cooperation reflects broader efforts to modernize Somalia’s port sector while fostering international partnerships designed to enhance trade, investment, and knowledge sharing.
