Somaliland opened an embassy in Jerusalem on Monday, months after Israel became the first country to recognize the breakaway region’s independence.
The Somaliland Presidency said the embassy opening marks a new phase in relations between Somaliland and Israel and strengthens Somaliland’s international representation.
“The embassy will serve as a platform for strategic cooperation between Somaliland and Israel in politics, economic development, investment, technology, education and other sectors,” the Presidency said.
It described the opening as a historic diplomatic achievement that advances Somaliland’s interests and international partnerships.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar welcomed Somaliland President Abdirahman Irro at Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs during what officials described as the Somaliland president’s first state visit.
